With just days to go until the start of the 2018 World Lure Angling Championships, Italian team captain Jimmy Ashlock discusses the team’s ambitions and tells us who will be competing at Rutland Water for the World Title.
This year’s competition will be Jimmy Ashlock’s third World Championships experience after Ireland and Russia.
What is the team’s ambition and expectation?
Italy, of course, has the maximum ambition at the World Championships. We are always confident when we fish but the thing is there are other teams here that are strong, definitely. We have to trust ourselves, when we play the game, we have to be confident and that’s it. We know we have a strong team.
Who will make up the Italian team at the championships?
Captain, Jimmy Ashlock
Team Manager, Giulano Morgantini
What experience do the anglers competing have of World Championships or other major competitions?
I (Jimmy Ashlock) have competed in Ireland when we won gold, as well as in Russia, Nicola Panareo was also world champion in 2013 in Ireland, while Gianni Morucci and Andrea Damiani have both competed three times at the world championships.
What are you most looking forward to with your visit to the UK in October?
Surely the goal that motivates us in the UK is the competition, but we want to have fun and make new friends as well. We are all here with the same passion for “fishing”.
We wish Jimmy and the entire Italian team good luck in this weekend’s competition, and look forward to seeing how they fare come end of the day on Sunday.
